Occupational Undermatch among Immigrants in Germany

In Germany, nearly a quarter of the workforce occupies positions that underutilize their qualifications and skills, characterized as "occupational undermatch". This phenomenon, which manifests when individuals possess qualifications and skills exceeding the demands of their current jobs, has profound implications for economic efficiency, individual prosperity, and social cohesion. Strikingly, this issue disproportionately affects individuals with immigrant backgrounds, constituting a crucial policy concern in the country.

In this comprehensive dissertation project, I embark on a multidimensional exploration of occupational undermatch among 1st and 2nd generation Immigrants in Germany. My aims are threefold:

1. Describe group-specific patterns: Investigate the presence and duration of occupational undermatch among different ethnic groups in Germany, considering generation status.

2. Explain undermatch patterns: Examine the conditions and mechanisms leading to prolonged occupational undermatch among migrants.

3. Assess social integration consequences: Evaluate how occupational undermatch influences migrants' social integration, particularly their ability to connect with the native-born population.
