Fairtrade University
Fairtrade represents a small facet in the complex of sustainability issues and a visible and concrete contribution to the topic of sustainability. When the University of Bamberg was awarded Fairtrade University status on 13 June 2018, this served as a foundation stone for opening up the topic of sustainability. In May 2021 and August 2022, the University of Bamberg was again recognised for its commitment to sustainability and may continue to bear the title Fairtrade University.
Dr Dagmar Steuer-Flieser, the Head of Administration, Human Resources and Finance at the University of Bamberg, says: “Awards like these not only affirm our efforts towards greater sustainability, but at the same time spur us on to continue and intensify our focus on sustainability issues and to implement further projects at the university. Our students in particular also make an important contribution to this with their own initiatives.”
In the Sustainability Steering Group’s Fairtrade working group, students and staff work together on the implementation of further actions. For example, they see to it that the University of Bamberg implements activities within the framework of the "Fairtrade University". They also plan their own projects on topics like fair wear, among others, and are also open to your own ideas. Every University of Bamberg student and staff member is welcome and can get involved. The Fairtrade Universities campaign is organised by Fairtrade Germany (TransFair e.V. – Association for the Promotion of Fair Trade in One World; Cologne). The initiator is a non-profit association that represents Fairtrade in Germany.
Since the 2014 summer semester, universities in Germany can be awarded the title “Fairtrade University” for their commitment to fair trade after having completed the corresponding application process. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of fair trade on campus and to deliver on commitments to sustainability and fairness at the university by practically implementing activities and assuming social responsibility in this sphere.
