A heart for bees!
There are around 600 species of wild bees in Germany, with around half of the species considered endangered or extinct. While BiBa Bamberg is already part of the DiKuLe wild bee project and has set up some nesting aids in Bamberg's Hainpark, it is important to remember that only ≈ 6% of wild bee species colonize nesting aids. In contrast, around 300 of the wild bee species nest in the ground or on steep walls.
In order to extend wild bee protection in Hainpark to these species, students built a heart-shaped sandarium for wild bees in Bamberg's Hainpark on 23.10.2024 in cooperation with BiBa Bamberg. Under the motto “A heart for bees”, the turf was first removed, stones were laid as a boundary and finally three tons of unwashed sand were spread and repeatedly tamped down in between.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the approval process and especially to the students for their hard work! We can't wait to see what there is to discover here next year!
