Yes, every May there is a Virtual Information Day. You can register here. You will meet the tutors, and will be introduced to the structure of the studies. ( We will not inform you about the Heritage Conservation Masters M.A.).

At the university of Bamberg induction days for beginnerst will be offered in April and October (see Erstsemester-Einf¨¹hrungstage ) In the winter term our programme is taking part. Also in Coburg there are induction days in March and September (see Erstsemester-Einf¨¹hrungstage Coburg) .

Sometimes we hold Open Days at the Centre for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies (KDWT) . For a preliminary visit in person (Am Zwinger 4/6 in Bamberg), please arrange this ahead of time and make an appointment for a course of studies or contact us by mail.

The Coburg University of Applied Sciences organises the Campus.Design Open every year in June, parallel to the Coburg Design Days. This is where the Faculty of Design presents itself as an open campus. Students of the individual study courses show their works. In addition, there are public lectures, workshops, lectures, guided tours through the buildings, installations and performances. The Chair for Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation are also represented there and you will get an impression of the campus.

Please note that during the semester the studies are organised in regular weekly courses, followed by application weeks during the semester break. This is not a block study, but regular attendance is required. We will be happy to advise you on how to proceed if you would like to study part-time.

You are a foreign student: Please consult the website of the Akademisches Auslandsamt (International Office) and the information on required proof of German language skills. For enrolment in the Master's programme Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation you need level B2 or an equivalent examination. Proof of your German language skills is absolutely necessary. Only after this examination will the application be forwarded to the head of the study programme for further examination and approval/provisional approval or rejection. Temporary admission without proof of B2 level is not possible. A complete online application, for applicants whose native language is not German, is recommended by July 15th. If you require a visa, your complete application should be received by 15 July at the latest.

Of course, we look forward to receiving your application! The recognition of the equivalence of your grade and your course of studies will be carried out by the Student Office. After this preliminary examination, the application is forwarded to the head of the study programme for further examination and approval/ provisional approval or rejection.

There may also be offers to work as a student assistant in digital monument technologies or heritage conservation, but this varies from semester to semester.

Application

The programme Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation is aimed at Bachelor (equivalent or higher) graduates, in particular from civil engineering, (interior) architecture, all study programmes in the field of heritage conservation and cultural heritage protection, restoration, computer science, digital humanities/digital art history, but also surveying, archives, geography, archaeology, cultural management or communication design with a decidedly technical, mathematical or technical/scientific background. If your previous education or your course of studies is not listed here, then please talk to the departmental student advisor before applying. In case of doubt, all lecturers will look at your application and make a joint decision about your admission. Personal preliminary interviews with the departmental student advisor or the head of the study programme in Bamberg or Coburg, as well as a meaningful letter of motivation together with the online application, will clarify your objectives for the study programme to us.

Yes, you can apply. We can admit you with subject to conditions, i.e. submission of your final certificate. The examination regulations stipulate that you can submit your Bachelor's certificate with a grade of 3,0 or higher by the end of the 1st semester. Please make sure that your bachelor's degree certificate is submitted to your bachelor's university in time, at the latest at the end of the first semester - end of March the following year!

No, at the moment your grade must be equal to or better than 3,0 (Bachelor's or Master's degree), otherwise we cannot accept you at the moment.

Yes, the first thing you do is sign up for Bamberg. Information on enrolling as a freshman can be found here.

After that you should enrol in Coburg, preferably before the beginning of the semester. Here you do not pay the Studentenwerk fee, but only the semester ticket.

You register online via the applicant portal at https://www.hs-coburg.de, at the very bottom 'Registration for your studies'.

You will then be enrolled as a secondary student and receive your student ID card by post, if applicable.

Free travel by bus and train with Coburg semester ticket! (by the way, the Bamberg ticket does not offer this, this is very regionally limited).

The semester fee for the Coburg semester ticket is about €62, varies slightly every year and can be read here. You do not have to pay the "Studentenwerksbeitrag" again in Coburg, you already do that in Bamberg.

Interdisciplinary questions on Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation

Yes, it is planned to hold an excursion every year dealing with topics of digital technologies in heritage and monument preservation. In 2018 we took the students to London and got a look behind the scenes of digitisation in archives and museums. In 2019 we went to the fortified churches in Transylvania, Romania, to visit a selection of fortified churches and learn about their preservation; one day was dedicated to the digitisation of a fortified church.

The Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation also offer an "International Summer School Monitoring Heritage". In 2018, this took place at Bamberg Cathedral. In 2019 the Summer School will take place in Havana/Cuba. We have since also had a summer school for a Ukrainian-German group in Bamberg.

Yes, if there are projects that require student work. Please contact us if you are interested.

The students of heritage conservation use the same CIP pool and have seminars in the same building (Am Zwinger 6 in Bamberg). So there are many possibilities to discuss or to arrange lunch together.

There are courses in which the students of Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation will take part and vice versa.

Furthermore, there is a regular students outing to which you will be invited (without lecturers). You will also be able to meet your fellow students at the annual graduation party.


Studies

Only the semester times and lecture-free days/times of the University of Bamberg apply in this study programme. There will be a difference to the semester times of the University of Coburg, but this does not apply to our study programme. You can follow the timetable for the courses, which we will give you every semester in good time.

The language of instruction is German, except for one lecturer and international guest lecturers who will speak to you in English. The following module is in English: GL7- Digital Archiving and Digital Humanities - Exercise and Lecture.

The ususal time for studies is 4 semesters full time, but you are eligible to study 6 semesters full time including your Masters thesis.

In the first semester, you have the option to choose from the basics; a total of 45 ECTS must be taken. The modules GL1 Introduction to Digital Monument Technologies and GL2 Fundamentals and Theories of Monument Preservation and their Relevance to Digital Monument Technologies are compulsory, and you can also choose between the modules GL3 to GL 10. Ideally, you should take about 30 ECTS for your workload, but you can also take more or less. The forms of examination vary between written examinations and portfolios.

In the second semester, you take the remaining basic modules in the first half of the semester; here you have a choice of the modules GL11 to GL14, GL 15 Deformation-oriented measurement is again a compulsory subject. Here, too, the forms of examination vary between written examinations and portfolio.

In the second half of the semester, you select the specialisations (you take three specialisation modules from eight offered, the selection is presented to you in the first half of the semester). The performance record for the specialisation seminars varies. Ideally, you will acquire a total of 30 ECTS in the second semester.

In the third semester, you take the profiling courses; the performance record varies depending on your choice. In the 3rd semester, you earn 30 ECTS. In this semester, you will already consider a Master's thesis topic, which you should discuss with your preferred supervisor if possible.

In the fourth semester, you will write your Master's thesis and take the associated Master's module Methods for the Master's Thesis and Science Communication. You will receive a handout with precise information on the form and rules of the Master's thesis. Start/registration and end/submission of the Master's thesis are fixed dates.

The duration of the Master's thesis in full-time is 6 months after registration.  For the Master's programme Digital Technologies in Heritage Conservation we mandatorily set the following dates: registration for the summer semester until 31.03. - duration: 01.04. - 30.09., submission of the Master's thesis until 30.09. of the same year; registration for the winter semester until 30.09. of the same year - duration: 01.10. - 30.03., submission of the Master's thesis until 30.03. of the following year; if the submission day falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the first following working day is considered the last submission day. A re-registration for the semester after the Master's thesis is thus avoided.

Master theseis in part-time is 12 months. Same dates for a start apply as above.


Career prospects

The first graduates completed their studies in 2020. However, some of the students are already working as working students during their studies, e.g. at the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in F¨¹rth. If you are interested in working as a working student in an institution, please contact us.

The graduates of the new study programme have good prospects of carrying out application-oriented projects in practice, participating in the management of data collections and exchange platforms and helping to shape future standards and development trends for integrative monument technologies in public administration, business and science.

In the field of heritage preservation, there is a need for specialists at the interface between the classical work of the architect / engineer / monument conservator or the museum expert with an innovative IT expert who is equally equipped for the needs of object sciences and IT competence in order to find appropriate solutions to problems.

Digital strategies for public relations and mediation are also increasingly being used in museums, as well as in archives and research institutions.  

Graduates with comprehensive knowledge of informatics possibilities of digitisation and sustainable long-term data storage with standardised metadata are therefore sought, as can be seen in more and more job advertisements.

The use of specialized digital sensors (hardware) and software for the efficient monitoring, recording, analysis and planning of repair measures has become indispensable in the fields of engineering and architecture.
