Reasons for studying English and American Studies at the University of Bamberg
Excellent Student-Faculty Ratio and Good Rankings
Small tutorial groups, a friendly and helpful atmosphere among the student body and the good availability of our teaching staff guarantee an outstanding student-to-staff ratio, as our consistently high student satisfaction rankings have confirmed again and again. Reading English and American Studies at Bamberg is a personal, rather than anonymous, experience.
In the 2016/17 CHE University Ranking, the University of Bamberg's Institute for English and American Studies was once again ranked among the best of its kind in Germany.
Programme Structure, Academic Environment and Excursions
A clear programme structure helps you find your bearings and complete the degree within six semesters. With a wide range of minor subjects and specialist pathways to choose from, you can individualise your studies considerably. You may also choose modules offered by the Centre for Medieval Studies (ZEMAS) or the Centre for Interreligious Studies (CIS).
You will be studying in an international teaching and learning environment. Your language training will take place at the Language Centre, where most teachers are native speakers. During excursions, you will directly encounter the language and culture of various anglophone regions.
Double Degrees
You can study for a dual degree. If you choose two major subjects, you will be able to gain a double bachelor's degree. If you are pursuing a teacher training degree in English, you can gain the Bachelor of Arts in English and American Studies in addition to your teacher education degree.
Practical Orientation
Gain practical perspectives from tutorials, career fairs and visits to publishing companies or acquire on-stage and backstage experiences with the Bamberg University English Drama Group.
International Networks
Far-reaching, award-winning exchange programmes with international institutions: our collaborations and partnerships with around 300 universities (including the University of Cambridge) in more than 60 countries offer students excellent opportunities for memorable stays abroad.

Studying in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
No need to commute: our university is situated right in the heart of a beautiful town with a unique culture and a high quality of life. With its large student population, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg offers plenty of activities outside the university, such as literary events, exhibitions, the Bamberg Symphony, theatres, independent cinemas and a lot more.
