Structure and Curriculum

 

To be awarded the Master of Arts degree in Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology, modules comprising at least 120 ECTS points must be completed.
This overall amount is composed of a combination of a core component of 60 ECTS points, distribution electives totalling at least 30 ECTS points and the master’s thesis (30 ECTS points).  
The core component of the Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology programme is made up of three module groups: 1. Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeological Sources; 2. Methodological and Practical Aspects of Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology; 3. Additional modules. A total of eight modules must be successfully completed.

The Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeological Sources module group is composed of four modules that each contain two lecture components and corresponding seminars.
If possible module 1 (lecture) and module 2 (seminar), or modules 3 and 4 accordingly, should be completed together in one semester since they usually build on each other in terms of content.

The Methodological and Practical Aspects of Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology module group comprises two modules, each worth 9 ECTS points.

The theoretical knowledge of archaeological methods acquired in this module is subsequently applied in a total of eight weeks of archaeological fieldwork. The fieldwork exercises are generally offered in the summer semesters.

The Fieldwork & Field Trips module is generally offered in the summer semester. This module aims to promote academic, subject-specific exchange – also on an international level.

The Subject-Specific Colloquia module runs over two semesters. This module aims to promote academic, subject-specific exchange – including on an international level in the context of (guest) lectures.

In the distribution elective component, you can establish individual focus areas by selecting modules from neighbouring disciplines (so-called export modules). The distribution elective component is made up of three modules worth 15, 10 and 5 ECTS points, which you can choose freely.

For this component, you write a master’s thesis on a subject from within the discipline of Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology.
You can register your master’s thesis when you can verify that you have earned at least 60 ECTS points within your master’s programme. You must register at a time that allows the degree programme to be completed within the maximum allowed duration of study.
